Capex has long-term contracts with several major refineries in the U.S. Gulf. and South America. Capex also occasionally supplies petcoke from refineries in Europe.
The total volume per year is increasing regularly and today exceeds 3 million metric tons.
Product composition varies among our supply sources. Sulfur content ranges from 3.5% to 7.5% and HGI from 35 to 85. These variations give Capex great flexibility in meeting a wide range of customer requirements.
Our Major Supply Sources
Shell Deer Park, Shell Motiva, Marathon, Total Gas and Power North America, Philipps 66, Petrocedeño (PDVSA), Repsol and BP Products.
What is Petcoke?
Petroleum coke, or petcoke, is a by-product of the petroleum refining process. On a dry basis, petcoke is approximately 85% carbon, 10% volatiles and 5% sulfur. Due to its high carbon content, petcoke is an excellent heat source. While bituminous coal has a heating value of approximately 12,000 BTUs per pound, petcoke is in the range of 14,200 BTUs per pound on a wet basis and 15,250 BTUs per pound when dry. Because petcoke is low in volatiles, it is stable and safe to handle in pulverized form.
With its relative low sulfur content, petcoke is ideal for burning in a cement or a lime kiln. Much of the sulfur combines with calcium carbonate or sodium to form sulfate compounds; the residual sulfur is converted into SO2, which is typically handled in the kiln’s scrubber.
With its high heat and low ash content it is also a good fuel for burning in the coal fired boilers of the utility plants.
How Does Petcoke Reduce Energy Costs?
Petcoke is thermodynamically superior and less expensive than natural gas, which is the fuel most commonly used in cement and lime kilns and some utility plants. A petcoke flame is much hotter and more radiant than that of natural gas. Petcoke’s emissivity is .95 vs. .31 for natural gas. Moreover, its low formation of water vapor improves burning efficiency.
Further to its core business, Petroleum Coke, Capex considers trades on Coal, Metallurgical Coke and Calcine Coke. Please contact us for detailed information.
